London
London is situated upon both banks of the river Thames.
Its population is over 7 million people.
London consists of 3 parts: the City of London, the West End and the East End.
The City occupies an area of about 2.6 square kilometers in the heart of London.
About half a million people work in the City. It is the financial centre of Britain. You can find plenty of banks, offices and the Stock Exchange there.
There are some ancient and famous buildings within the City, such as St Paul's Cathedral, Wren's masterpiece, and the Tower of London which was built nine centuries ago and used as a royal palace, a fortress, and a political prison. Now it is a museum.
The West End can be called the centre of London. Here are the historical palaces as well as famous parks, such as Hyde park with its Speaker's Corner.
In the West End there is the Queen's residence, Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster (it is the seat of Parliament).
The name "West End" has the associations with wealth, luxury and goods of high quality.
There are more than 40 theatres, concert halls, and many museums, such as the British museum and the best art galleries.
Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London. It was so named to commemorate Admiral Nelson's victory at the battle of Trafalgar.
The University of London is situated here.
The East of the city is the port of London.
It is great industrial area that depends upon shipping.
London is now surrounded by a belt of agricultural and wooded land.
